San Francisco Historical Photograph Collection, SF Public Library

Not the greatest resolution, but a good collection, and backed by a very knowledgeable staff at the Main Library and SF.

The Library of Congress: American Memory

A wide variety of photographs spanning the entire United States. There is a massive amount of pictures represented in these collections. I've had some luck searching by city, then zooming in from there.

I search by street to narrow searches down. This site only performs simple searches, though you can narrow your results in another search window. You sometimes will need to refer to old maps to see what the old names of streets or landmarks are. Ie. South Van Ness in SF's Mission District used to be Howard St.

USGS Photo Library
http://libraryphoto.cr.usgs.gov/index.html

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Central Regional Library maintains a collection of over 400,000 photographs taken during geologic studies of the United States and its territories from 1868 to the present.

These images provide a visual history of the discovery, development, and sciences of the United States and its Geological Survey. Some photographs have been used in USGS publications, but most have never been published.

Currently, this website represents less than 10 percent of the Library's images with approximately 30,000 photographs on-line. Please visit the "Latest Additions" menu at the top of this page for regular updates of photographs to the website.aaaaaa

Portland, Oregon, US PDXHistory.com http://pdxhistory.com/index.html Kind of wonky UX on this site but some great images, mostly all identified by location. Site navigation allows to browse by Amusement Parks, Mt. Hood, Railroads and other points of interest. There's even a section dedicated to Portland neighborhoods.

Sacramento County, California, US Center for Sacramento History http://www.centerforsacramentohistory.org The Center for Sacramento History's online archive includes about 50,000 photographs (about 1% of the archive's total collections) with a searchable online database. Images are fairly small and watermarked. The staff of this city/county archive are very skilled and helpful.
